Children have a natural enthusiasm for art and this is
encouraged by exposing them to the works of the great masters and
giving them the necessary skills for accurate drawing.
Children study and copy works of the Renaissance masters as well
as great works from the Australian Artistic tradition. They also
learn something of the lives of selected artists.
Art classes begin from a point of stillness. Careful observation
of real objects brings the children in touch with what they see and
may involve a natural emotional response. They can then create
meaningful art which reflects the beauty of this creation. Links
with other subjects are also created. For example, the study of
classical civilizations in history is complemented by the study and
manufacture of Greek vases, the writing of Egyptian Hieroglyphics,
or the sculpting in clay of classical statues or busts. Nature
Studies may lead to flower pressing, sketches of leaves, etc.
Classes in clay modelling, needlework, printing, digital
photography and woodwork are also offered.
Erasmus School enjoys success each year in the Royal Melbourne
Show and in a variety of other Art competitions.
