The study of mathematics reveals the wonderful order and pattern
in the universe. Mathematics also has its practical uses. At
Erasmus School we recognise both aspects of mathematics.
Multiplication tables, Addition and Subtraction facts are learnt
by heart in the first few years at school. Without a quick
automatic response in mental arithmetic it is difficult for
children to progress with confidence. Concise principles, rules and
techniques are taught, practised and revised, so that the child can
tackle problems without confusion. A good grasp of the basics in
the early years builds a solid foundation for the study of more
advanced mathematics in secondary school.
Geometry is taught from the age of seven. Children learn
fundamental principles or axioms which can be observed in nature
and used as a starting point for geometric constructions. We use
the traditional tools of geometry, a compass and a straight
edge.
